The Tassili N'Ajjer National Park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 and covers an area of 72,000 km² with breathtaking landscapes, bizarre rock formations, stony plains, sandy, wooded valleys, arid valley floors, and vast dune areas. Traces of human settlement dating back up to 12,000 years can be found, even during past wetter climatic periods. The once abundant fauna is depicted in numerous rock carvings of elephants, giraffes, lions, and other savanna animals. Later, engravings and paintings in the rock shelters of the herders, hunters, and warriors of that time bear witness to their lives. An enigmatic people left behind burial sites, and nomads left behind remnants of their campsites. Fossils can also be discovered.
