Travel in the Algerian desert
Climate
The region lies at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,700 metres above sea level. The best time to visit is between September and April. Temperatures range from 15 to 32°C during the day and 4 to 10°C at night. The dry heat is easy to tolerate.
Safety
Every tourist trip must be applied for and approved. Trips are only approved by the Ministry of Tourism in Algiers, which is subordinate to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Park Office in Djanet, if there is no danger to tourists in this region. The Algerian military has a strong presence along the border with Libya and secures access to the various regions of the National Park. As a certified company, we are in regular contact with the authorities during a trip. We carry a satellite phone with us on every trip.
Services
We arrange flights to Djanet, the mandatory visas (your passport must not contain any stamps from Israel) and all Algerian permits. From the moment you land in Djanet until your departure, you will be looked after by Tahar and his team. You will receive a programme with information about the planned daily stages. Tour guides, drivers, cooks and support staff will take care of your well-being, transport your luggage and set up camp. We provide foam mats (5 cm thick, with fabric cover) and blankets for sleeping under the open sky. The humidity is very low, so you can sleep under the open sky without any problems. We can also provide you with a tent if you book in advance. You will receive three meals a day.
Requirements
A stay in the desert also means giving up everyday habits. It requires flexibility and tolerance on your part. You will normally sleep outdoors on a mattress or in a tent. There will be no daily shower. You will need to be sure-footed (hiking poles may be useful) and have good shoes for uneven terrain. The group leader's behavioural advice must be followed for your own safety. Sometimes it is not possible to adhere strictly to the programme. There are few media distractions, although the mobile network now extends far into the desert around the oases. The tour guide will communicate mainly in French.
Luggage and clothing
A large travel bag or duffel bag is best; a hard-shell suitcase is not suitable. You will need a daypack, a sleeping bag for 0–6°C and clothing made of natural fibres. We recommend long-sleeved shirts or blouses, sturdy long trousers, a warm jumper or fleece jacket, possibly a windbreaker, walking boots, sandals, hiking poles if required, headgear, sunglasses, head torch, sun cream, toiletries bag with toiletries, toilet paper and matches, pyjamas, and personal medication. We will provide sufficient drinking water. It is advisable to bring a personal water bottle to refill.
Behaviour
Walking barefoot in the sand is not recommended. Please respect that Algeria is an Islamic country and that religion plays an important role in the lives of the Tuaregs. Refrain from wearing shorts and overly revealing clothing. No alcohol is offered on our trips. Collecting and taking away antiquities such as shards or arrowheads, as well as sand, stones, plants and animals, is prohibited, even if they are lying around everywhere. Checks are likely upon departure.
Money and documents
You are not allowed to bring Algerian currency into the country. Bring euros with you. You can exchange them for dinars at Algiers Airport, in exchange offices or at cash machines. In Djanet, exchange options are limited, and outside the city you will not be able to exchange money. Please keep a separate copy of your passport, visa and flight documents.
Customs
You may import your personal equipment free of charge. Keep your currency exchange receipts during the trip. These may be checked upon departure.
Rechargeable and regular batteries
These cannot be purchased on the road and charging options via the car battery are limited. Therefore, make sure you have enough batteries or a large power bank for recharging.
Cameras
The desert wind carries sand, so pack sensitive equipment in plastic bags and avoid changing lenses frequently.
Waste
We always carry a bin bag with us to collect waste. Please take any personal waste such as empty batteries home with you and dispose of it properly there. Used toilet paper is burned individually on site.
Insurance and terms and conditions
You are responsible for taking out adequate insurance. International health insurance and travel cancellation insurance must be included with your visa application. The invoice amount is due 6 weeks before the start of the trip. There are no costs if we cancel. If you cancel, we will charge you the actual costs incurred for the flights. For travel within the country, 50% of the price is due for cancellations made between ten and one day before the trip.
Flights
Our travel programmes are based on Air Algérie's winter flight schedule, which offers a connection between Algiers and Djanet in the early morning and late evening. This makes it possible to fly from Europe to Djanet and from Djanet to Europe in one day. Air Algérie flies from Algiers to more than a dozen European cities, including Geneva, Marseille, Paris, Frankfurt, etc. Other airlines fly to Algiers from other destinations in Europe.
Prices
Our tour prices are calculated per person for small groups of 3 or more people. Those wishing to travel alone therefore pay a surcharge of 200% (three times the price stated in the description of tours 1-6). For a small group of two people, the surcharge per person is 50%. This includes everything from and to Djanet Airport, i.e. the flight from Europe to Algeria is not included. The visa fee is also charged separately. Travel to the departure airport in Europe and tips (recommended price €30 per trip, staff and traveller) are also not included. Tips can also be given in euros.
